In 1925 Jacques Guerlain created Shalimar, the first oriental perfume in history, inspired by the passionate love story between the Indian emperor Shah Jahan and princess Mumtaz Mahal. Its bottle designed by Raymond Guerlain was inspired by the fountains of the Shalimar Gardens and won first prize at the Decorative Arts Exhibition in Paris.
